Split Trunk

A severed union–
condemned partners
creak skyward
in mangled permanence
above a split trunk.

Silence, save the minute din
of stretching bark
as they slowly writhe
to pull apart.

Below a broken promise,
the roots that bind them
perennially dig for
some interred reminder
of life before indiscretion.
